The 2023 Easter Road Trip

Apr. 17, 2023 — Apr. 24, 2022 All Day Auckland – Tāmaki Makaurau Waikato Taranaki

The 2023 BNZT Road Trip has been planned for the second week of the Easter school holidays next year.

Starting from central Auckland, the trip will set out on Monday 17th April heading to the Hamilton/Cambridge area, where we will spend 2 nights;  several people have expressed an interest in exploring Hamilton Gardens, and there is also the possibility of indulging in a posh afternoon tea at the Zealong Tea Estate.  Obviously, this gives the opportunity of travelling on the relatively new road with a 110 kph limit!

We will leave the Hamilton area on Wednesday 19th, and travel over to Kawhia for lunch and then head down to the Waitomo area for 2 nights accommodation, allowing travellers time on Thursday for adventures/walks/white-water rafting in the glow-worm capital of NZ.

We will then head for New Plymouth on Friday, 21st April, by either the coastal route or the Forgotten Highway – the route is up to you!  In New Plymouth, BNZT champions Sharmayne and Justin Smith are organising an ELECTRICANA event on Saturday morning for locals and travellers to coalesce!   There are many sights in NP for all, and Sunday could be the day for a ‘round the mountain ride’ checking out the sights and chargers along the way – this would be entirely dependent on the weather, of course!

The Roadtrippers can then decide how to plot the route back home – and on which day!

We would hope some more southerly-based EV owners would travel up to NP for the Electricana event!

To get an idea of who wants to join the trip, we would ask potential travellers to email kathryn@betternz.org with their intentions – including the car they will be driving and the number of people travelling.  This is a ‘fund it yourself’ trip, and we would suggest you secure accommodation as soon as you are sure you wish to travel on this trip!  It is also a great opportunity to check in with family and friends en route who may have the odd spare bedroom!
